Do you like woodworking and building things? Are you detail oriented and like to solve problems? Then a career as a carpenter might be right for you! Carpenters follow blueprints to build, assemble, install and repair fixtures and structures that are usually made of wood. A carpenter may also work with other materials such as plastic, fiberglass or drywall.
An experienced carpenter can become a supervisor or a project manager. Carpenters who are bi-lingual in English and Spanish have a better chance of becoming supervisors than those who are not since many construction workers speak Spanish.
There are some dangers and discomforts that come with this job. Carpenters do work that is very physical. They must lift heavy materials and spend a lot of time on their feet or kneeling. They are also frequently in cramped spaces and often have to stand on ladders. It's not a surprise, then, that those who work in this occupation have a high rate of injuries that include falls, cuts, and strained muscles.
A carpenter’s responsibilities include:
Building and repairing cabinets, tables, office furniture, and related items.
Operating woodworking machinery.
Setting, bracing, and stripping wood and steel forms.
Practicing and maintaining safety regulations and procedures in and out of the shop.
The most common way to become a carpenter is through a three or four-year apprenticeship that includes technical and paid on-the-job training. Job prospects for carpenters are expected to be good for the next several years. The average carpenter makes $50,000 a year or about $25 an hour.
Joke of the Day:
What do you call a dinosaur in a cowboy hat?
Tyrannosaurus Tex!
Today’s lunch options from the kitchen include:
Pulled Pork Sandwich with Corn
Pizza and Salad - Cheese, Sausage, Pepperoni
Cheesy Bread with Salad
Grab & Go’s : American Combo Sub, Caesar Salad, Garden Hearty Salad, Sunbutter & Jelly Sandwich
