Oregon City School District is proud to recognize two outstanding staff members from Gardiner Middle School among this year’s Strategic Plan Staff Award recipients.
Russell Copeland received the district’s Wellness Award, while Jess Barchus was honored with the All-In Award. Together, their recognition reflects Gardiner Middle School’s commitment to fostering student well-being, belonging and strong partnerships with students, families and the broader school community.
The Wellness Award recognizes staff members who make a meaningful difference in the well-being of students and colleagues. Copeland’s work helps create a school environment where students feel seen, supported and connected. By contributing to a culture of care, encouragement and positive relationships, he helps ensure students have the emotional and social support they need to fully participate in learning.
Copeland’s recognition connects to the district’s Strategic Plan priority of Robust Systems of Belonging & Well-Being. This area of the plan centers on making sure students experience a sense of belonging and have the social, emotional and practical supports they need to be well, engaged and ready to learn.
Barchus’ All-In Award celebrates her commitment to engagement, collaboration and community connection. She was recognized for bringing an all-in mindset to supporting students, families and colleagues. Her work highlights the importance of building trust, strengthening relationships and ensuring that families and community members feel welcomed as partners in student success.

The All-In Award reflects OCSD’s Strategic Plan priority of Engaged Communities, which focuses on developing meaningful partnerships among schools, families and the community. The award recognizes staff members who foster participation, connection and shared ownership of student success.
Copeland and Barchus were among 10 Oregon City School District staff members recognized at Welcome Back Day for bringing the district’s Strategic Plan to life through their everyday work. Their awards celebrate the many ways staff members create meaningful connections and help students thrive—both inside and outside the classroom.
Congratulations to Russell Copeland and Jess Barchus, and thank you for helping make Gardiner Middle School a place where students are first.
